Philosophy
Restraint, in three dialects.
We do not have a signature style. We have a way of listening, and three languages in which a site can answer.
Three ways of listening to a site.
Every site asks for its own language. Over seventeen years we have refined three, distinct in temperament and united by restraint. Choose one to see how the room changes.
The discipline of less.
We remove until only what is necessary remains: one opening, one plane of limestone, one shadow crossing the floor like the hand of a sundial. What is left is not emptiness. It is attention.
- Materials
- Travertine, lime plaster, bleached oak
- Light
- Diffuse, reflected twice before it reaches you
- Gesture
- One opening per wall, never more
- Built example
- Casa Aurea, Comporta
The honesty of mass.
Concrete cast in place and left as the formwork found it. Weight becomes shelter, texture becomes memory. We let every board leave its grain in the wall, so the building remembers how it was made.
- Materials
- Board-formed concrete, basalt, blackened steel
- Light
- Raking, carved by deep reveals
- Gesture
- Walls 600 mm thick, openings cut rather than framed
- Built example
- Pavilion of Stillness, Naoshima
The intelligence of nature.
Curves learned from water on stone, rooms that open toward the garden like an outstretched hand. Rammed earth, cedar and clay render: architecture that weathers with its landscape rather than against it.
- Materials
- Rammed earth, cedar, clay render
- Light
- Dappled, filtered through leaves and screens
- Gesture
- No right angle where the body meets the building
- Built example
- Casa Celosía, Mallorca
We do not design rooms to be looked at. We shape them to be lived in slowly, so that one morning, years from now, the light finds the wall exactly where we promised it would.
